Lake Louise – 1st Jan

My first day of 2017 involved standing on a frozen lake. I don’t mean any old lake, I mean the Lake Louise. This famous lake is one of the most photographed lakes in the world. I wish I could have seen the bright turquoise coloured water. On the other hand it was mind-blowing walking across the lake, covered in thick ice and snow. It was picture perfect.

It is conveniently located just off the Trans-Canada highway and the walk from the car park to the lake was very short, yet slippy. It is a tourist hot spot so be prepared. This doesn’t make it any less beautiful. In fact it was rather amazing watching numerous people wandering down the frozen lake towards the mountains and another handful of people ice skating.

After taking lots of photos and cautiously walking on the frozen lake, we made our way to the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. This hotel is beautiful and sits perfectly alongside the lake. An ice bar appeared, an outside ice bar. Yes it was that cold,-38 or somewhere close. In fact they were ice sculptures all over the place. I guess you can do that with extremely cold temperatures. We enjoyed a Bailey’s hot chocolate and then ventured inside the hotel.

Anyone can wander inside and browse round the shops, eat at their restaurants and have a drink at their bar. In fact I’ve never seen such a busier hotel, lots of people taking in the luxury of the Fairmont. We bought some postcards which included prepaid postage, what a great idea. We took advantage of the bar and drank beer whilst writing our postcards.

After another short walk down Lake Louise we packed up and drove towards Banff. Another lake I would have loved to have seen nearby was Moraine Lake. From what I hear it is just as beautiful but less touristy. Unfortunately the road closes during the winter months so I guess I’ll just have to come back.

Our day came to an end at Tunnel Mountain VillageΒ II campground. A bus runs from the campground to Banff town centre so we went to Wild Bills. I was presuming it to be wild but I was wrong, the food was ok though. Banff is a cute town, with one main high street. It is very picturesque with a mountain as the backdrop. I definitely need to head back here in the summer months.
